Soil 101
Every lawn is only as good as the soil under it. Here is what soil is made of, why it differs from place to place, and what that means for your yard.
Organic layer — leaves, clippings, thatch, and mulch resting on the surface, slowly breaking down into food for everything below.
Topsoil — the dark, living layer where roots, nutrients, water, and earthworms are. This layer is the whole game. Deeper and darker is better.
Subsoil — denser and paler, low in life and nutrients. In central Indiana this is heavy clay.
Parent material — the raw ground the soil formed from: glacial till here, bedrock or sand elsewhere.
Ideal: thin & active — under ½ inch on lawns, 2–3 inches of mulch in beds
You want material that is actually breaking down and feeding the soil — grass clippings, mulched leaves, wood mulch in beds. On a lawn, a thin layer is healthy, but thatch thicker than about half an inch starts blocking water and air (that's what dethatching fixes). In planting beds, 2–3 inches of mulch is the sweet spot: enough to hold moisture and block weeds, not so deep it smothers roots or piles against trunks.
Ideal: 6+ inches for lawns · 8–12 for gardens · more for trees
Dark, crumbly, and alive is the goal — soil that holds together when squeezed but breaks apart with a poke, with earthworms in nearly every shovelful. Depth matters by plant: grass does most of its living in the top 6 inches, vegetable gardens want 8–12, and shrubs and trees root deeper and wider still. This is the one layer you can genuinely build — every year of returned clippings and compost makes it a little deeper.
Ideal: firm but passable
You'll never make subsoil rich, and you don't need to — its job is to drain water away and give deep roots somewhere to anchor. What you want is subsoil that water and roots can slowly move through. Around here the concern is the opposite: clay subsoil so dense it seals like a pot with no drainage hole. Aeration and deep-rooted plants gradually open the boundary between topsoil and subsoil, which is where most of the improvement happens.
Ideal: whatever you have — it's not changing
This is the raw ground everything above formed from, and there's nothing to fix or want here — it simply sets the starting personality of your soil: glacial till here, bedrock in New England, sand in the desert. It's worth knowing about because it explains your soil's pH and drainage tendencies, but the work always happens in the layers above it.
These depths are for a typical lawn and garden — the "right" depth always depends on the plant and the climate. Desert natives thrive on soil a Midwest lawn would starve in, because each is built for its own place.
Climate and history write the soil. Grasslands built deep topsoil, forests fed rich forest floors, glaciers pressed down clay or scraped land to the rock, and deserts stayed too dry to build much topsoil at all. Where you live sets your starting point.
General patterns — soil varies yard to yard, and every state has exceptions. A soil test is the only way to know yours.
Topsoil: 12–24+ inches
Why it's this way: centuries of tallgrass prairie growing, dying back, and regrowing — each year's roots becoming next year's soil — built some of the deepest, richest topsoil on Earth.
For plants: nearly ideal. Loamy, near-neutral pH, loaded with nutrients and organic matter. This is why the region feeds the world.
Underfoot: soft and springy, like walking on a firm mattress. Dark and crumbly in the hand.
The work: maintain it. Don't compact it, keep organic matter cycling, and it stays this way.
Topsoil: 4–8 inches over dense clay
Why it's this way: glaciers once covered this ground and left behind "till" — clay, silt, and stone ground together and pressed dense under the weight of the ice. A modest topsoil layer has formed on top since.
For plants: the clay actually holds nutrients and water well — the problem is density. Roots struggle to push through, water perches on top in spring, and the surface bakes hard in summer droughts. pH is usually near neutral, so lime is rarely needed here.
Underfoot: soggy and sticky in spring, firm to concrete-hard by August. If your yard cracks in a dry summer, that's the clay talking.
The work: you can't change the clay, but you can make it behave like good soil. Core aeration opens it up so air, water, and roots can move; compost and returned clippings slowly thicken the topsoil. Expect visible improvement in 2–3 seasons and a genuinely different lawn in about 5 years of consistent care.
Topsoil: 2–6 inches over red clay
Why it's this way: generations of heat and heavy rain weathered the ground into iron-rich clay — the red is literally rust — and all that rainfall washed calcium and other nutrients downward out of reach.
For plants: acidic (often pH 4.5–5.5) and hungry. Nutrients wash out faster than they build up, so lime and regular feeding are a way of life for Southern lawns.
Underfoot: slick and greasy when wet — red clay stains everything — then brick-hard when dry.
The work: lime to raise pH, organic matter to build the thin topsoil. Ongoing, not one-time: the climate keeps leaching, so the care keeps going.
Topsoil: 0–2 inches, often none
Why it's this way: with little rain there are few plants, and with few plants there's little dying back to become topsoil. In many places minerals hardened underground into caliche — a natural cement layer people need a pickaxe to plant through.
For plants: sandy, alkaline, and very low in organic matter. Water drains through instantly or sits on caliche. Desert plants are built for exactly this — thirsty lawns are not.
Underfoot: loose and gritty, sometimes with a crunchy crust. Nothing springy about it.
The work: this soil is meant to be this way — the climate made it. The wise path is working with it: native and desert-adapted plants, drip irrigation, mulch to hold every drop. Fighting for a Midwest-style lawn there means fighting the climate forever.
Topsoil: 8–20 inches, rich but acidic
Why it's this way: volcanic ash and old lava broke down into deep, dark loam, and evergreen forests have fed it a steady diet of needles and leaves ever since — that spongy "duff" layer on any forest floor is soil in the making.
For plants: rich and fertile, but the constant rain washes minerals down and leaves it acidic — which moss loves. Lawns there battle moss the way we battle clay.
Underfoot: soft, damp, and spongy, especially under trees. The forest floor gives under every step.
The work: lime to ease the acidity, drainage and sunlight to hold back moss. The fertility is free; the balance takes upkeep.
Topsoil: 2–8 inches, full of stone
Why it's this way: the same ice that pressed Indiana's clay flat scraped New England down toward the rock, leaving thin, stony ground with bedrock close to the surface. Early farmers pulled so many stones from their fields that the region is famous for its stone walls.
For plants: shallow, often acidic under pine and hemlock, and interrupted by rock. Roots run out of room before they run out of ambition.
Underfoot: firm and uneven — you feel the stones. A shovel rings off rock more often than not.
The work: work around the rock rather than against it — raised beds, imported topsoil for gardens, and lime where conifers have soured the ground.
Wherever you start, good soil looks the same: dark, crumbly, soft underfoot, alive with worms, holding moisture without staying soggy. You can't change what the ground is made of — but you can change how it behaves. The recipe is the same everywhere; only the starting point differs.
Core aeration relieves compaction so air, water, and roots can move. On Indiana clay, once a year in fall is the single highest-impact thing you can do.
Organic matter is the only true long-term soil improver: returned clippings, mulched leaves, compost topdressing. Soft green material feeds the soil in weeks; wood and bark take years — that's why mulch lasts, breaking down slowly from the bottom where it touches soil.
Soil improves on nature's schedule, not ours. Expect a noticeably better lawn in 2–3 seasons and truly changed soil in about 5 years of consistent care. Every season of good habits compounds.
